purāṇāni purā-vidaḥ
munayo ’ṣṭādaśa prāhuḥ

TRANSLATION
 | Sages expert in ancient histories have declared that the Purāṇas, according to their various characteristics, can be divided into eighteen major Purāṇas and eighteen secondary Purāṇas.
